Good potential for the treatment of cleft children

A well-run clinic with maxillofacial and orthodontic departments for the poorer parts of the population was established in the Tajik capital of Dushanbe under the leadership of Dr Martin Kamp and thanks to his initiative "Projekt TadjikAID". The hospital also has an A&E department, a ward with 25 beds and an operating theatre with wake-up area and intensive care unit. The cleft operations are conducted by the lead surgeon Dr Abdullo Hasanovic. He also takes on very difficult conditions when travelling to remote parts of the county, half of which lies at an altitude of more than 3,000m in order to inform about cleft lips and palates in maternity clinics and to find affected children. Even in children's homes he looks for children affected by the deformation.

The population of Tajikistan is heavily dependent on this help. The access to medical care is very poor for most of the country. Even the capital city is understaffed when it comes to emergency doctors. Progress in the healthcare system has virtually ground to a halt since the country's independence from the Soviet Union.

Especially Women and girls suffer under the poor conditions in Tajikistan. Because of widespread discrimination against women and poverty nearly a quarter of girls do not attend school, even though schooling is compulsory. These conditions make the diagnosis of a congenital cleft lip and palate especially hard for the mothers.
