Highly motivated surgeons in Faizabad, Kunduz and Mazar-i-Sharif

The partners of Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe in Afghanistan are the local surgeons Dr Sebghatullah Natory in Kunduz, Dr Habibullah Atif in Faizabad and Drs Nooria Zia and Wahed Abdul Ershad in Mazar-i-Sharif. They all received their basic and further training through us over the past couple of years. Currently each surgeon operates on several children with cleft lips and palates every month, even though the security situation has worsened significantly. The time we personally had the chance to get to know these inquisitive surgeons was at the surgical workshop held in the Indian metropolis of Bengaluru in 2015. Besides sharing their knowledge with our attending Indian and German surgeons (among them Dr Dr Götz Ehmann) we also presented them with new surgical instruments for cleft operations. The next meeting took place at the International Cleft Congress in February 2017 in Chennai, India. The Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe project manager for Afghanistan is ENT-specialist Dr Ulrike Lamlé from Berlin.
