The University Clinic in Mbarara, southern Uganda

For more than ten years now the project managers Dr Dr Oliver Blume and Gunther Au-Balbach have been operating in East Africa. The University Clinic Mbarara is their - and therefore our - most important cooperation partner for the medical treatment of cleft children in southern Uganda, as well as Burundi, Rwanda and north-western Tanzania. On their operating campaigns, which are also used to train local surgeons on the necessary procedures, they are always joined by a team from the university clinic, comprising of an anaesthetist and Ugandan nurses and orderlies. Plans now see the gradual establishment of a cleft centre for East Africa in Mbarara that will coordinate help for cleft patients in Uganda, Burundi and north-western Tanzania. At the same time our partner hospitals in Bujumbura (Burundi) and Rulenge (Tanzania) will open drop-in centres for cleft children and, where possible, develop operating locations. As long as qualified surgeons are still not available in sufficiently high numbers either the two German surgeons themselves will continue to operate on cleft children, or the surgeons that they trained who are based in Mbarara (Uganda) and Rwamagana (Rwanda) will provide the operations.
