Help for cleft children in Tanzania

For more than two years now the entirely African team of Rwandan surgeon Dr Laurent Siborurema and Ugandan anaesthetist Dr Emmanuel Munyarugero have been operating on cleft children in Tanzania. Dr Siborurema is one of the talented African surgeons trained by our East Africa project managers, the oral and maxillofacial surgeons Dr Dr Oliver Blume (Munich) and Gunther Au-Balbach (Solingen).

The project itself was brought to life by a German agronomist and horticulturalist who by chance came upon a cleft child during one of his work stays and asked us for help. Dr Dr Oliver Blume and Gunther Au-Balbach successfully operated the little girl in Burundi and arranged a first operating campaign in Biharamulo/Tanzania during March of 2016 together with the abovementioned African colleagues.

In close cooperation with bishop Severine Niwemugizi and the diocese of Rulenge-Ngara, which runs several hospitals, we have since then gone to great lengths to educate the rural population on the possibilities of operations and treatment for cleft children. The African team arrives at least twice a year to operate on 15 to 25 cases. In 2019 Dr Siborurema hopes to be able to help 90 children who have been identified and are being looked after by Dr Prosper Mallya, our highly motivated local project coordinator.
