The security situation in the country on the Hindu Kush has been critical for many years. The Taliban\u2019s takeover in August 2021 marked a decisive turning point for the country and its people. The economy\u2014especially the vital agricultural sector\u2014is in crisis. Medical care is dire. Many hospitals are destroyed, and there is a shortage of qualified doctors. Most aid organizations have had to cease operations.<\/p>\n<p>Two of our four local surgeons remain on the ground and continue, albeit with severe limitations, to help children. To protect them, we are not presenting them here.<\/p>\n<p>In Afghanistan, our work focuses on basic care for children with cleft conditions. For us, right now, every child we can help with surgery\u2014and thus offer a better life\u2014truly counts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since the beginning of our work in Afghanistan in 2010, we have been able to fund more than 1,506 cleft surgeries. Our teams are based in Kunduz, Mazar-i-Sharif and Faizabad. With the Taliban coming to power in summer 2021, our teams were only able to operate under severely restricted and difficult
