Profile of Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe e.V.

Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe works to ensure that children with cleft lip and palate have access to qualified medical treatment, no matter where they live.

Without treatment, the children are impaired in their daily lives by their clefts for the rest of their lives. Because of their appearance, they are often ostracized and have to live on the fringes of society. The cleft in the lip and/or the palate means that the children have great problems with such basic activities as eating, drinking, swallowing, or speaking intelligibly.

The key treatment measure for cleft lip and palate is surgery to close the cleft. This gives the children the chance to live a better life. In Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe's project countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa, the surgery, performed by qualified local surgeons, costs on average only 300 euros.
