Help for cleft children in Nepal
Our work in Nepal in numbers
We have been active in Nepal at a location east of Kathmandu since the end of April 2024.
A target of 100 cleft surgeries per year has been set for now.
In Nepal, it is estimated that there is around one case of cleft for every 600 births.
Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe in Nepal
We officially inaugurated our first project location in Nepal at the end of April 2024. Our project partner is Dhulikhel Hospital, a teaching hospital of Kathmandu University with 475 beds and 300 doctors. Dhulikel is a town located 25 kilometers east of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. In funding the project, we cooperate with the Australian organization SmileHigh Foundation as a funding partner.
We take advantage of synergies and expertise from our large, well-established projects in the neighboring countries of India and Bangladesh to set up and develop our aid in Nepal.
Key areas of our work in Nepal
The team in Dhulikhel offers cleft surgeries, dental and orthodontic treatment. A target of 100 cleft operations per year has been set for the start.
Our partners in Nepal
Our project partner in Nepal, the Cleft and Craniofacial Center at Dhulikhel Hospital east of Kathmandu, has been working as a well-equipped treatment center for cleft patients with funding from us since late April 2024. In addition to cleft surgeries, children in need will also be able to receive other treatments such as orthodontics and dentistry. The project manager at the Cleft Craniofacial Center is Dr. Chandan Upadhyaya. He has a highly committed young team at his side, including maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Nitesh Chaurasia, orthodontist Dr. Ravi Kumar Mahtro and anaesthetists Dr. Sangina Ranjit and Prof. Dr. Jeevan Singh.
Impressions from our help in Nepal
Country portrait Nepal
Nepal is one of 44 landlocked countries in the world. It borders China and India. Most of the country's landscape is dominated by the Himalayas: seven of the ten highest mountains in the world - including the famous Mount Everest - are located in Nepal. Mountain tourism is an important source of income, but the mountainous landscape is also an obstacle to economic development.
The country is still very rural: according to World Bank figures, only 21% of the population live in cities, compared to 57% worldwide. Like many countries in the region, the country is still struggling with many problems despite increasing economic growth. It currently ranks 146th out of 193 countries on the Human Development Index (HDI). The country hopes to achieve middle-income status by 2030 thanks to its currently solid economic growth.
Healthcare for pregnant women, mothers and children has recently improved significantly. A quarter of children under the age of 5 continue to suffer from stunted growth due to malnutrition. Unfortunately, our experience suggests that children with cleft lip and palate often have an even harder time.
