A man with cleft lip from classic era Peru

Cleft lips and palates are a reality of life in all eras and on all continents. A striking reminder of this is this beautiful and anatomically detailed ceramic bust of a man with a cleft lip from the Mochica culture. The Mochica culture (or: Moche culture) inhabited the northern coastal region of Peru in the first millennium AD and left behind a huge wealth of works of art, many of which, like this one, are housed in the spectacular collection of the Museo Larco in Lima, Peru.

Our heartfelt thanks go to the Museu Larco for suppyling the photo and giving permission for its use.
