Writing our annual report is always a great occasion for us to pause and reflect on the past year’s events. The year 2022 was a particularly gratifying year for our association in many respects.
We were able to increase the number of cleft lip and palate surgeries we facilitated by one seventh to 7,899, a new record in our 20-year history. This is a particularly impressive development in view of the fact that the last all-time record was only set in 2021. Income and expenses remained in balance despite this rapid expansion in the volume of therapies provided to patients.
These 7,899 surgeries represent thousands of children who have had a major obstacle in their life removed, and the affected families behind them who have had a heavy weight lifted off their hearts. We would like to thank our many loyal partners in our project countries, our volunteer German doctors and, of course, our many donors who have made this important help possible over the last 20 years and continue to make it possible every day.
20 years of Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe
Our 20th anniversary was an important highlight last year. In 2002, our association was founded by a small circle of passionate people in a living room in Freiburg im Breisgau. With the expansion of our aid and our projects worldwide, the team has since grown. What has remained is the motivation and passion for our mission to pave the way to a better life for children with cleft lip and palate in developing countries.
Two dear longtime companions who had a decisive hand in shaping the history of our association are no longer with us. We take the opportunity of our anniversary year annual report to pay tribute to them for their invaluable contributions to our association. In addition, there is a brief historical overview of our history and a report from our anniversary event in Filderstadt.
And of course, as every year, the annual report contains many photographs, facts and figures. You can look forward to exciting insights into our projects and many little patient stories that remind us of the human impact of our work.
